hiking in Oahu
Hiking in Oahu is one of the best ways to enjoy the beautiful tradewinds and sunshine. There are lots of various hikes from family oriented easy hikes, to long, hot and very strenuous hikes. I would like to talk about two hikes very close to Waikiki. The first hike is a relatively easy hike through a beautiful rainforest in Manoa valley just a few miles outside of Waikiki and easily reachable by bus. This hike will take you to Manoa falls. After hiking for about one mile through the rainforest, you will come across a beautiful bamboo forest. You will cross the stream a few times and after about another mile, you will end up at Manoa falls. This is a really great hike for families with children, because it is pretty easy. The second hike is a little more difficult with higher elevations and is much more hotter because there is little or no shade. This hike is the hike to Diamond Head Summit. It is also just a few miles from Waikiki to the trailhead. You will climb a few staircases (over 100 stairs), go through a dark tunnel and pass WWII bunkers used to fight the Japanese. When you reach the summit, you will be treated with probably the best view in Oahu. You will see all of Waikiki and it's majestic hotels in the distance. In the winter months you may even see a few migrating whales. Take sunscreen and plenty of water. |
